Millions of homeless dogs are euthanized each year. The numbers are staggering and heartbreaking. That is why adopting from shelters and rescue groups is essential to saving lives. When the time came for me to get a dog, I always knew I would adopt from a shelter. And that's what I did. I went to the Atlanta Humane Society and looked at the vast numbers of dogs, before it was clear Blu and I should be together. I officially became a dog-ma that fateful day on Oct 25, 2002. The bond between me and my boy was evident when Blu and I returned to the Atlanta Humane Society (same day) for his vaccinations. On the drive back to the Humane Society, at a red light, Blu looked at me and gave me a big smooch. It was the first of many he's given since. On that day in October, Blu and I saved each other.
I encourage everyone interested in adding a pet to their families to adopt from locals shelters. The life they save will become much more than a family pet, it will become a family member. This October (2011) Blu and I will celebrate nine years together. He's given me his best and hopefully I've done the same for him. I think I'll make the old guy steak and potatoes to say thank you - my friend, my family, my Blu.
